When should an eco checkout show a duty or tariff surcharge?
Quick answer
Show a named duties and import taxes line before pay when this destination order will actually owe that money (DDP collected, or DDU/DAP with a door warning). Absorb it into list price when the cost is already in COGS or nothing is due. Never bury a tariff as handling, eco surcharge, or climate import. Do not invent a duty percentage. Freight bars: free shipping threshold. Markets go-live: Shopify Markets. List-price change: price increase comms. Climate widgets are not duty lines: climate contribution checkout.
Vs other Intelligence guides
| Guide | Job |
|---|---|
| Shopify Markets | Country go/no-go, including DDP or clear DDU as a gate. Not the show vs absorb copy kit. |
| Free shipping threshold | AOV bar for freight. Not customs. |
| Price increase comms | Lasting list change when inbound tariffs hit COGS. Not a checkout line. |
| Climate contribution checkout | Optional climate widget. Never mix it with duty. |
| EmpCo checkout audit | Crawl shipping titles and hang tags. Keep duty names factual. This page decides if the line appears. |
| Checkout upsells | AOV add-ons. A duty is not an upsell SKU. |
| This guide | When checkout should show a duty or tariff surcharge vs absorb it vs bury it |
Composite operator guidance. Not legal advice and not HS classification. Use the amount your duties app returns. Do not paste a typical duty rate onto the PDP.
Show vs absorb vs bury
Split two costs before anyone names a surcharge SKU.
| Cost | Who owes it | Honest surface |
|---|---|---|
| Destination duties and import taxes | This order, this market | Checkout line (DDP) or a door warning (DDU/DAP) |
| Inbound tariff already in COGS | You, when you imported inventory | List price. Use the price increase kit if the number moves. No fake line on a domestic checkout |
| Posture | Shopper sees | When it is honest | Banned |
|---|---|---|---|
| Show (DDP) | Named line before pay. Engine amount. Paid with the order. | Cross-border, duties due, you collect DDP, carriers can issue DDP labels | Eco surcharge. A made-up rate |
| Show (DDU/DAP) | Duties not included. Carrier may collect on delivery. No included-duties badge. | You cannot or will not collect DDP | A cheap sticker that hides the door bill. No extra fees |
| Absorb | One list price. No duty line. PDP may say price includes import duties to [market] only if true. | Nothing is due, or duty is already inside the list, and contribution still clears | Duty-free eco shipping. Charging the same cost again at checkout |
| Bury | Handling, processing, green tariff, climate fee | Never | All of it |
Shopify's DDP path collects duties and import taxes at checkout so the buyer is not billed again after the fact. DDU/DAP leaves collection to delivery. Showing duties at checkout does not replace carrier support for DDP labels. Ops and copy have to match.
When to show the line
- Destination is not the fulfillment country. Home-market orders do not get a tariff surcharge because inbound COGS rose.
- Duties are due on this order. If the engine returns zero, do not add a line to look international.
- The amount is not already inside the list you are charging. Absorb or show, not both for the same cost.
- You can name it duties or import taxes with the engine amount, or warn that DDU/DAP collection happens on delivery.
Absorb when the order is domestic, when nothing is due, or when you eat destination duty after running the break-even calculator. If absorbing needs a higher list, that is a price-increase announcement, not a checkout surprise. Partial go: DDP where labels work, DDU/DAP with a door warning elsewhere. Sequence the market in Shopify Markets.
Steal this copy kit
Same nouns on PDP, cart, checkout, confirmation, packing slip, ads, and macros. Same hour. Blank beats theater.
| Surface | Show DDP | Absorb | DDU/DAP | Kill |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| PDP | Import duties are calculated at checkout for [market]. | Price includes import duties to [market], only if true. | Duties may be collected on delivery to [market]. | Eco import. Green tariff. A typical rate |
| Checkout / cart | Duties and import taxes, or Import duties. Engine amount. | VAT as VAT only. No extra line. | Duties are not included. Your carrier may collect them on delivery. | Handling fee. Sustainability surcharge |
| Ads / feed | Do not lead with a duty rate | Do not call the price duty-free as a green claim | Do not advertise a cheap door-to-door price that excludes duties | Carbon border merch unless counsel signed that this SKU is in scope |
| CS / thank-you | Amount from [duties_source]. Refunds follow the customs rule we publish. Same name on the slip. | We included expected duties in the price. No second line. | We did not collect. The carrier bills you. | It is an eco fee. Upgrading the claim after pay |
Paste macros from the support kit. Score leftover adjectives in the green claims calculator. EmpCo crawl: checkout audit.
Claims freeze
Allowed: Import duties. Duties and import taxes. Duties not included. Price includes import duties to [market] if true. VAT named as VAT. Shipping named as shipping.
Banned: Eco surcharge. Green tariff. Climate import fee. Planet-friendly duties. Sustainability handling. Tariff-positive order. A typical duty rate. No extra fees on a DDU path. Duty-free eco shipping. One import eco blob that mixes VAT, freight, and tariff. Carbon border copy for SKUs that are not in scope (most eco apparel and beauty is not).
A climate widget stays optional and separate. Do not pre-check it to soften a duty line. Free shipping is freight. Do not hide destination duty inside a free-shipping progress bar. See climate contribution and free shipping threshold.
Go / no-go
| Call | When |
|---|---|
| No-go on a surcharge line | Domestic order, nothing due, cost already in list, DDP promised without DDP labels, or the name would be eco / climate / handling |
| Go on show (DDP) | Duties due, engine amount, named duties line, carriers can fulfill DDP, surfaces match, no invented rate |
| Go on show (DDU/DAP) | You will not collect. Door warning on PDP, cart, and checkout. Ads do not say no extra fees |
| Go on absorb | Contribution still clears, included-duties sentence is true if used, no second line, list comms used if the number moved |
Score duty tickets per 100 international orders, door-bill complaints, checkout CVR by market, and claim incidents. Do not score a typical tariff rate.
Name the duty or eat it
A tariff is not a sustainability story. Show a factual line, absorb it into list, or skip the market. Burying it as eco copy buys a trust incident and an EmpCo problem in the same week.
Template fields
| Field | Fill with | Do not invent |
|---|---|---|
[market] | destination you actually ship | a global surcharge on every checkout |
[incoterm] | DDP or DDU/DAP, matching labels you can buy | included duties you cannot fulfill |
[line_name] | Duties and import taxes, or Import duties | eco surcharge, green tariff, handling |
[duties_source] | Shopify Duties, named broker, or named carrier | a blog typical rate |
[absorb_or_show] | one posture per market | show and absorb the same cost |
[pdp_sentence] | calculated at checkout / includes duties / may be collected on delivery | duty-free eco shipping |
[refund_rule] | what you actually refund on duties vs product | a promise customs cannot honor |
Brief: "[market] [incoterm]. Posture [absorb_or_show]. Line [line_name] from [duties_source]. PDP [pdp_sentence]. Refund [refund_rule]."
7-day actions
- Day 1: export 90 days of duty and door-bill tickets by market. Domestic tariff complaints are a list-price problem. Do not invent a rate.
- Day 2: pick show vs absorb per live market. Run contribution in the break-even calculator. If list must move, use the price increase kit.
- Day 3: freeze eco surcharge, green tariff, climate import. Score leftovers in the green claims calculator.
- Day 4: set [line_name] and any DDU warning. Match PDP and cart the same hour.
- Day 5: ship macros, packing-slip strings, and [refund_rule].
- Day 6: ads and Merchant Center. Kill duty-free eco lines. Do not stack a climate widget on the duty line.
- Day 7: mystery-shop one DDP path and one DDU/DAP path. Checkout equals confirmation. Score tickets and CVR by market, not a vanity duty %.
Frequently asked questions
When should an eco checkout show a duty or tariff surcharge?
Show a named duties line before pay when the destination order will actually owe duties (DDP collected, or DDU/DAP with a door warning). Absorb into list when the cost is already in COGS or nothing is due. Never bury it as handling, eco surcharge, or climate import. Do not invent a duty percentage.
How is this different from free shipping, Markets, or a price increase?
Free shipping is the freight AOV bar. Markets is whether a country is go or no-go. A price increase is a lasting list change when inbound tariffs hit COGS. This guide is whether checkout shows a destination duty line, absorbs it, or buries it.
Can we name the line an eco surcharge or green tariff?
No. Duty collection is not a sustainability claim. Use Import duties or Duties and import taxes. EmpCo still applies if an app wrote the string.
What duty percentage should we show on the PDP?
None that you invented. Show the amount your duties engine, broker, or carrier quoted for this SKU and destination, or say duties are calculated at checkout. A typical tariff rate is a claim you cannot prove.
Should we collect DDP or ship DDU/DAP?
Collect DDP when carriers can issue DDP labels and you can show the engine amount. Use DDU/DAP only with a door warning on PDP, cart, and checkout. Do not advertise no extra fees on a DDU path.
